Best Flokati Rugs 2024 (And How To Care For Them)

What Is A Flokati Rug?

Nothing makes a room cozier than a beautiful, plush, soft pillow of a sheepskin rug. It warms your feet, is soft to walk on, and looks so inviting.

A lot of people will agree that when it comes to wool rugs, nothing beats the real thing.

What if you aren’t ok with the idea of genuine sheepskin, but you want the feel of the actual wool under your feet? That’s where Flokati rugs are the ultimate option.

Flokati rugs appeared in America in the 1970s. They came from Greece, and it didn’t take long for them to become extremely popular.

Flokati shag rugs are made with real wool.

The yarn is woven together, then soaked in water to release the fibers, making them look and feel like genuine sheepskin, only it’s just sheared wool.

These rugs are lovely because of the no harm aspect of them, but they can be a little higher maintenance than other kinds of rugs.

So expect a little work if you decide a Flokati is right for you. They are also not as thick as real sheepskin because they don’t have the leather underneath.

If you want a softer rug, make sure you buy a rug pad to place under your Flokati. I recommend the one below.

The reward of a real wool rug can be well worth the work when you have that bit of authentic warmth and softness under your feet.

So don’t let the idea of a higher maintenance rug scare you.

Now that you know a little more about Flokati Rugs, here are a couple of great options that are made with real wool as well as some fantastic synthetic wool options.

I recommend this rug pad for any of these rugs.

Not only will it make the Flokati rug feel softer under your feet, but it will also keep it from sliding around.

Mohawk uses a dense felt that is 1/4 inch thick for padding and has a rubber backing for grip.

The felt is also a rough texture to hold the rug in place, and you can cut it to down to whatever size you need for odd-shaped rugs.

Even synthetic flokati and sheepskin rugs require some maintenance to keep them looking fluffy and nice.

Especially if you walk on them with bare feet.

A rug brush like this one can be used to fluff up the rug periodically or after washing and drying.

It’s gentle on the fibers and the same kind of brush you would use to brush a dog.

Another fantastic product to use on 100% wool flokati rugs is wool wash and conditioner like the Outback Gold Wool Wash.

It’s plant based and full of natural oils.

They use Australian Tea Tree Oil that works as a gentle natural antiseptic, Aloe and Coconut Oil for softening, and lots of lanolin which is a natural wax secreted by wool bearing animals.

It helps the wool keep its natural soft and anti-stain properties.

How To Care For & Wash A Flokati Rug

100% Wool Flokati Rugs are the most work the first few weeks after purchase, and they are expected to shed up to two weeks until the fibers settle.

They are a natural product, and you may need to wash them directly after purchase.

To wash, put your flokati in your washer, use the delicate cycle on cold, and add a small amount of mild detergent.

Then let it air dry avoiding direct sunlight. Afterward, brush until the rug is fluffy again with a sheepskin brush, or if you don’t have one, a hairbrush will work as well.

For regular cleaning, take it outside and give it a good shake. Also, brush as needed to keep it fluffy.

Remember never to vacuum these rugs, especially when they are new, and have not had time to settle.
