Best Patio/Deck Propane Fire Pits For Cozy Evenings 2024

Put a Propane Fire Pit On Your Patio Or Deck For Instant Coziness

My love for propane fire pits grew quickly after I bought one myself.

Being able to have a fire on the patio every evening without coming in smelling like smoke is a blessing for a cozy-lover like myself.

I want to be able to go outdoors and have a fire whenever I want to, and with my propane fire pit, I can.

Putting a fire pit on your patio or deck is the easiest way to make an outdoor place cozier.

Not only do most of them look really nice, but they’re also so easy to use and quick to start your friends will want to gather at your place because you have an awesome patio with a smoke-free fire.

I grew up doing a lot of camping and being outdoors, and we always had to find wood and sticks before we could have a fire.

I feel spoiled now when all I need to do is make sure I have propane in the tank, and I can have a fire outside.

Anyway, enough rambling!

Outland Living Series 403 Propane Fire Pit Table

Outland Living Series 403-Espresso Brown Fire Table, Espresso Brown/50,000 BTU

Check Price on Amazon

If you’re looking for the most stylish (in my opinion) outdoor fire pit, Outland Living has you covered with their Series 403.

I can’t get over how amazing this fire pit table looks, and if you don’t like or need a rectangular fire pit, they also sell a square model.

There are also two colors to choose from: espresso brown, and slate grey.

Outland Living Series 403-Slate Grey Fire Table, Slate Grey/50,000 BTU

I am reviewing the rectangular version, but be aware that you can choose.

The square one takes up much less space, so if your patio or deck doesn’t have space for the big one, but you like the design, it’s a great option.

The table with the fire pit in the center is 44 inches long and weighs 96 pounds, so you will need some help to move it around.

A 20-pound propane gas tank fits underneath the fire pit, so it’s hidden at all times until you need to get more propane.

I like the fact that manufacturers make sure there is a place to hide and protect the propane tank.

It would decrease the coziness-level if you had to see the propane tank sitting next to the fire pit.

The propane cable is 3 feet, so if you have a smaller tank, it might also work.

Outland Living Series 403-Espresso Brown Fire Table, Espresso Brown/50,000 BTU

Outland Living has made sure this table and fire pit is safe to use, by getting it CSA approved.

The powder-coated aluminum frame construction is solid, strong, and sturdy, and won’t be bothered by the flame.

All materials used are heat resistant and low maintenance.

What I love about this fire pit except for the cozy fire itself, is the black tempered glass table surrounding the pit.

By buying a fire pit with a table, this is all you’ll need for your patio furniture.

There is no need to have a fire pit and a table since this one has both.

Igniting the Outland Living 403 is easy with the push button spark ignition.

Make sure you have propane in the tank, turn it on, and spark the fire pit to see the flames rise.

If shopping for a propane tank to use with this, make sure you get one that is 20 lb/5 gallons.

Grocery stores often have these located outside the store, and you can either fill or swap them out for a new filled one when you’re empty.

If you want to leave the fire pit outside all year, I recommend taking a look at the accessory set Outland Living sells separately.

Outland Fire Table 3 Piece Rectangle Accessory Set - Tempered Glass Lid Insert, Tempered Glass Wind Guard Fence and Water Resistant Durable Cover for Series 401/403 Outdoor Propane Fire Pit Tables

This kit includes a glass lid insert, a glass wind guard fence, and a UV and water-resistant cover.

This is the kind of fire pit I would put in my backyard or on my deck, and it’s my favorite in this review.

I wish Outland Living would’ve included a cover at this price point, but since there is one available to be bought separately, I will let it slide.

What I Like

  • Available in rectangular and square design
  • Black tempered tabletop
  • Push-button spark ignition
  • CSA Approved
  • 55,000 BTU
  • Hides propane tank underneath

Blue Rhino Outdoor Propane Gas Fire Pit

Endless Summer 30 Inch Square 30,000 BTU Outdoor Propane Gas Patio Fire Table with Blue Fire Glass and Protective Cover

Check Price on Amazon

One of my favorite outdoor propane fire pits I have seen is this one by Endless Summer.

The model is called the Blue Rhino, and the reason for that is the blue fire glass that is included.

These are put in the fire pit and safe to keep there when the flame is on.

I like this fire pit because it offers a lot of value and features for the money.

It would be a great addition to any patio or deck that doesn’t have a ton of space or only gets used a couple of days out of the year, so you don’t need a bigger model.

Even though it’s a compact size, it can hide a 20 lb propane tank underneath it, so it will stay stylish even when lit.

See Also: Best High-Quality Bunjo Bungee Chairs That Will Last

Speaking of lit, it can burn up to 30,000 BTU per hour, which is enough to keep you warm on a colder summer evening while being extremely cozy outdoors.

Endless Summer includes a cover so you can leave the fire pit out when not in use. This cover goes over the whole unit and not just the blue glass.

My favorite thing about this fire pit is the fiberglass reinforced resin tabletop.

I love the design and color of it, and I like it when a fire pit like this also functions as a small table to put my drink or snacks on.

The dimension of the whole unit is 30 by 30 inches, and 24 inches tall. It weighs 70 pounds, so it won’t be too hard to move if needed.

What I Like

  • Fiberglass reinforced resin tabletop
  • Push-button spark ignition
  • Blue fire glass included
  • 35,000 BTU
  • Hides propane tank underneath
  • Cover included

Endless Summer GAD15258SP LP Gas Outdoor Fire Table

Endless Summer 30 Inch Square 50,000 BTU LP Gas Outdoor Fire Pit Table with Slate Tile Mantel, Cut Out Design, Fire Glass, and Cover, Brown Multi

Check Price on Amazon

This fire pit is from the same company as #2 on the list above, and they share a lot of features, but some are different.

One big difference is the BTU. This model is 50,000 BTU, vs. 30,000 BTU on the previous one.

The table and frame have a different design, where the doors are more see-through.

This means that you will see the propane tank underneath it if it’s light outside. Not a dealbreaker, but something to think about when choosing.

The Blue Rhino comes with blue fire glass, and this one comes with brown.

If you would like this one but with blue fire glass, you can also purchase the glass separately (click to view on Amazon).

With 50,000 BTU, you will be able to run the fire pit hotter, but it will, of course, use more propane.

An awesome accessory that is included with this model, in addition to the full cover, is the table insert that makes the table much bigger.

Endless Summer 30 Inch Square 50,000 BTU LP Gas Outdoor Fire Pit Table with Slate Tile Mantel, Cut Out Design, Fire Glass, and Cover, Brown Multi

This makes it a great table to keep outdoors in the summer, and more usable during the day if you want a table to put your computer or magazines on.

A big thumbs up to Endless Summer for including it in the purchase with this model!

What I Like

  • Fiberglass reinforced resin tabletop
  • Push-button spark ignition
  • Brown fire glass included
  • 50,000 BTU
  • Hides propane tank underneath
  • Cover and table insert included

Giantex Gas Fire Pit With Stone Circle

Giantex Gas Fire Pit, 28 Inch 40,000 BTU Propane Fire Pit Outdoor w/Natural Stone, Cover, ETL Certification, Stainless-Steel Gas Burner w/Electronic Ignition Lava Rock (Gray)

Check Price on Amazon

I love fake stone, so I automatically love this fire pit by Giantex.

It’s a unique style since it’s shorter and looks more like a traditional fire pit you can sit around and enjoy.

The burner can burn up to 40,000 BTU and it uses a one-step spark ignition button with a flame control knob on the side.

Another thing I like about this fire bowl is the lava rocks that are included.

Lava rocks are my favorite things to put in a propane fire pit because they get warm quickly and stay warm while being lightweight and beautiful.

See Also: Best Inflatable Hot Tubs Reviewed

I have lava rocks in my propane fire pit, and what I do is turn the burner to high for about 15 minutes, then I set it to low to save propane.

Since the rocks have heated up, I am still getting a sweet cozy heat from the fireplace.

The dimensions of the fire pit bowl are 27.5 inches in diameter and 9 inches tall.

All materials used are fire-retardant, so even though you’re going to have a big open fire, there is no need to worry about the whole bowl setting on fire.

It can also be used on wooden decks.

It’s shorter than most patio fire pits which can be a good thing since heat rises.

A lower fire pit will put off more heat to the people around it and can be better than taller patio fire pits in cold weather.

Giantex Gas Fire Pit, 28 Inch 40,000 BTU Propane Fire Pit Outdoor w/Natural Stone, Cover, ETL Certification, Stainless-Steel Gas Burner w/Electronic Ignition Lava Rock (Gray)

A cover is included to cover up the whole bowl while not in use.

It’s a great cover that will protect the material and burner from the elements. The propane hose is almost 10 feet long.

What I Like

  • Realistic rock fire pit
  • Push-button spark ignition
  • Lava rocks included
  • 40,000 BTU
  • Cover included

Bali Outdoors LP Gas Fireplace 28

BALI OUTDOORS Propane Fire Pit Table, 28 inch 50,000 BTU Auto-Ignition Outdoor Gas Fire Pit Table, CSA Certification Approval and Strong Steel Tabletop (Square Black)

Check Price on Amazon

Last up, Bali Outdoors 28 inch fireplace. This is another fire pit that offers great value for its price, and is for that reason really popular.

A 50,000 BTU burner is very powerful and will heat the included lava rocks quickly.

If you don’t like lava rocks, I recommend taking a look at fire glass (click to view on Amazon).

Starting the fire pit is easy after connecting the propane hose and turning it on, with the electronic ignition. The button also serves as a dial to control the flame.

A 20-pound propane tank can be hidden underneath the fire pit, so you don’t have to see it.

This makes the design very clean, and you can focus on being cozy on your patio.

With a square design like this, it can be placed in a lot of different areas.

On a patio, on a deck, a backyard, or why not bring it with you in your camper and take it out of the truck when you feel like having a fire?

BALI OUTDOORS Propane Fire Pit Table, 28 inch 50,000 BTU Auto-Ignition Outdoor Gas Fire Pit Table, CSA Certification Approval and Strong Steel Tabletop (Square Black)

Bali Outdoors includes a table inlet that makes the table larger.

This “cover” does, however, not cover the whole unit so if you plan on leaving the fire pit out in the rain, you’re going to want to invest in a full cover like this (click to view on Amazon).

What I Like

  • Push-button spark ignition
  • Lava rocks included
  • 50,000 BTU
  • Hides propane tank underneath
  • Table inlet included

Propane Fire Pit Buyer’s Guide

When buying a propane fire pit to put on your patio, you might quickly decide which one to go for.

Before hitting buy, I recommend considering a couple of things.

Design/Size

It might or might not be obvious, but most fire pits are pretty big, bigger than you expect.

Check the measurements and decide where you’re going to place the fire pit before you buy one, so you don’t end up feeling like it’s too big.

They don’t look huge in the photos, so measuring is the best way to make sure you know what you’re getting.

BTU

The more BTUs the fire pit has, the more it is capable of burning propane per hour. This doesn’t always mean a larger flame, but more heat.

If you’re looking for a fireplace for a small patio or deck, the BTUs aren’t as important since you probably will sit close to the fire pit.

If you’re sitting close burning 50,000 BTUs per hour will be too warm for your legs.

For an open backyard, 50,000 BTU’s might be precisely what you’ll need to stay warm on a cooler summer evening.

Lava Rocks Vs. Fire Glass

Which one is the best, lava rocks or fire glass? Well, it depends on who you’re asking.

It’s mostly about taste and which one you think looks better.

Lava rocks are cheaper, while fire glass costs a lot if you want to fill a whole fire pit.

Fire glass will radiate heat well and make the fire pit feel warmer than if you use lava rocks.

Lava rocks will, however, stay warmer for longer after you’ve turned the flame down or off completely.

One little hack you could do is fill the bottom with lava rocks, and spread fire glass on top, this way you can have the best of both worlds.

Table

Most patio fire pits are part tables or come with table inlets to make the whole top a table.

This is an excellent feature, but will you need it?

I like having a drink on cozy summer evenings, so I like the table feature.

But if you’re only looking for a fire pit, maybe a portable fireplace would fit you better?

Cover

While some companies advertise that they include a cover for their fire pit, you should check the photos or specifications to know what kind of cover this is.

Most of them are only covers for the fire pit part and not to cover the whole unit.

If you want to leave the fireplace out when not in use and want it to withstand rain, you’re going to want to invest in a full cover that protects both the top and the sides.

Remember to turn off the propane and store the propane in a different, fully covered spot if the fire pit is left outside for months without being used.

Frequently Asked Questions About Propane Fire Pits

Are propane fire pits safe?

A fire pit that has been CSA certified is as safe as it can be.

Use common sense, don’t leave the fire alone, don’t let kids play around it or be around it without supervision, and understand how to deal with propane safely.

The most important thing when dealing with propane is proper ventilation.

Petro has a great article on propane and safety.

How hot does a propane fire pit get?

The flames from a propane fire pit are very hot and will burn your skin.

When my 40,000 BTU fire pit is set on high, I have to move at least a foot away from it not to burn my legs.

You can set most fire pits on low settings and get much closer to them without feeling a ton of heat.

If space is an issue, use it on the low setting to not burn yourself.

How to make a propane fire pit hotter?

The easiest way to make a fire pit even hotter than it is would be by putting fire glass (click to view on Amazon) in it instead of lava rocks. Fire glass radiates heat better than lava rocks.

How to light a propane fire pit?

If your propane fireplace doesn’t have an automatic ignition button, or it has malfunctioned, you can light the flame with a lighter.

I recommend stick lighters (click to view on Amazon).

Turn the dial to release propane, and quickly light it by one of the propane holes.

You will have to move the lava rocks or fire glass to access this.

Don’t let a ton of propane escape when lighting the fire pit, or you might ignite a bigger flame than you would like so close to you.

propane fire pits safe flame cozy minds

Are propane fire pits legal in my state?

Propane fire pits are legal in most states and cities as long as they burn propane or natural gas and are CSA certified.

Can propane fire pits be used indoors?

It’s not recommended to use propane fire pits indoors since they burn propane.

While it might be fine in a ventilated area, I wouldn’t recommend doing it for safety reasons.

If you have a screened-in porch, you should be OK as long as you open the windows or doors to ventilate the area well.

Read the manual that came with your fireplace to learn about the minimum ceiling-height required for the fireplace to function properly

Can propane fire pits be used on wooden decks?

A good fire pit doesn’t get warm on the bottom or sides and can be used on a wooden deck without any significant risks.

Never leave the fireplace lit when you’re not nearby, though, and don’t let kids play around it.
