Are NFL Sideline Jackets Heated?

Playing Football Outside In The Winter? Expect To Be Cold

The NFL is no stranger to staying warm in freezing temperatures.

Some games take place in below-freezing temperatures and even snow.

The infamous “Ice Bowl” comes to mind when talking about NFL games in freezing temperatures.

In 1967, the Dallas Cowboys faced down with the Greenbay Packers at Lambeau Feild.

The average temp in the stadium was -15 degrees with windchills up to -36 degrees.

The referees couldn’t even use their whistles because they would freeze to their lips.

The game carried on and became one of the most exciting cold-weather games in history.

The coldest recorded game in NFL history was the “Freezer Bowl.” The game took place in Cincinnati, Ohio.

It was the AFC Championship between the Bengals and the San Diego Chargers.

The average temperature was -9 with wind chills of -38 degrees. The lowest temperatures during a game recorded in NFL history.

Now to the question, are NFL sideline jackets heated?

While the jackets used on the sidelines are enormous to fit the player’s shoulder pads, they are not heated.

It’s a pretty simple design, a nylon vinyl shell with a fleece liner. You may be surprised to hear that, but hey, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

These types of jackets are called sideline capes, and you can actually buy similar ones on Amazon (click here to view).

Of course, they have more high-tech ways to stay warm on the sidelines.

They have things like an endless supply of disposable hand warmers, heated benches, large heaters pumping hot air onto the sidelines, and even vaseline.

Football players will sometimes use vaseline to coat their arms and face with as added insulation and protection against the cold.

Heated clothing is a fantastic way to stay warm, and I’ve even read about heated insoles used on the field.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to make the sideline jacket heated, but for now, they are just a simple long cape designed to trap body heat during those frigid winter games.

when it's cold football players wear sideline jackets to stay warm
If the players are cold and wearing sideline jackets, dress warmer as well.

NFL players get all these remarkable ways to stay warm during games, but what about fans like us?

Not only are the stadiums extremely cold, but you also don’t get to run around to keep warm like the players.

It can get extremely cold sitting or standing for hours, and you don’t want to spend all your time thinking about how cold it is.

Heated clothes are a fantastic way to stay warm, especially when you aren’t able to move around a lot.

The technology has come a long way over the years, and they make a heated version of almost everything now.

If you are planning ongoing to any game that will be outdoors in the cold, be sure to pick up some heated clothes to make the experience much better.

People around you will wonder why you aren’t shivering as you stay toasty warm in your heated gear.

  1. I believe Josh allen has raynoun syndrome which is poor circulation in hands and feet which I have too. I wear darn tough merino wool socks. I highly recommend for josh and people with this same issue.
